SAFETY

NEUS GORGE HALF DAY RAFTING

DISTANCE: HALF DAY

The Neus Gorge run is a whitewater trip suitable for families including younger children. Rapids are graded 1-3 and consist of pool-and-drop, or sections of whitewater between stretches of flat water with current. We generally start below the Neus Falls, on the southern bank of the river, about 18km by road above Kakamas, and run from the “pebble beach” down to ‘Die Mas’ campsite at Kakamas. The trip takes 3+ hours. We stop and provide you with refreshments along the way. The gorge is noticeable for its spectacular displays of granite formations and river-sculpted rocks, with beautiful surging rapids running between rock walls. You also have the option of a 10m or 20m freefall cliff jump inside the Gorge as well as our famous ‘NAPPY RUN’ at Eagles corner! You are fully equipped with helmets and lifejackets, and professionally guided, paddling 2-seater Crocodile inflatables.

PERSONAL GEAR
In summer (October-March): T-shirt and tackies or sandals (not slip slops – they come off). A peaked cap to be worn under the helmet, lots of sunscreen. It is advisable to wear long trousers to protect your exposed legs against the sun. Bring a light windcheater in case it clouds over and gets rainy (unlikely!). Bring snacks such as sweets and chips if you need the energy! In autumn, winter and spring (April-September): Same as the above but on cooler days also bring a jersey. We will carry your jersey in a waterproof bucket, only wear if needed. You will get wet, so come prepared for a day of wild, wet and wonderful water fun! We also supply 100% dry cases for your cameras, so you can capture the adventure!

TRANSPORT
Meet at KALAHARI GATEWAY HOTEL RECEPTION (KAKAMAS). We take you to the start point and from the end back to where cars are parked.
WE ALSO OFFER ADDITIONAL TRANSPORT FROM ANY ESTABLISHMENT WITH EXTRA COSTS INVOLVED! Please advice on additional transport costs

ORANGE GORGE – ONSEEPKANS RAFTING EXPERIENCE
(HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
(NO PASSPORTS NEEDED)

DISTANCE: 4DAYS/4NIGHTS

The Orange Gorge is the most scenic whitewater rafting trail in Southern Africa. It takes us though a region bypassed by most travellers, to the foot of the magnificent Ritchie or !Gariep Falls. The trail lies west of Augrabies Falls, in remote mountainous country. It is a wonderful environment for self-discovery and for cementing family relationships or building team spirit. No previous rafting experience is required but you should be reasonably fit, able to swim and keen on a true adventure.

BEST SEASONS
Summer temperatures in the Kalahari can go over 45deg C. The best times to visit the area are early and late summer (25- 35deg), or even winter “the green season” (15-25deg). Winter frost is rare, and the days are glorious. Tents will be needed in autumn and winter (see below). The sun shines all day with occasional cloudy days but in general this is the peak season for travel in the Kalahari and you’ll love it.

INTO THE DESERT MOUNTAINS…
In terms of distance travelled on the river, this is a very short trail for 3 ½ days. The reason is that we take fully two days to enjoy the gorge, walking and paddling, swimming and relaxing.
The trail is dramatic in every sense: towering mountain scenery, a river that alternates  between glassy pools and exciting rapids, and stunning campsites.

BLOUPUTS – RAAP&SKRAAP ORANGE RIVER RAFTING GETAWAY
(NO PASSPORTS NEEDED)

DISTANCE: 3DAYS/3NIGHTS
DISTANCE: 4DAYS/4NIGHTS

For centuries the majestic Orange River has carved its way through the African landscape and in places has created an arid semi-desert mountain wilderness of rugged but compelling grandeur. Over-hanging long stretches of the river below Augrabies Falls is the towering Nama Plateau, which forms the backdrop for a memorable adventure on a desert river. Additional features are magnificent sunsets and the solitude, tranquillity and incredible silence of this remote area. Days are spent paddling down meandering waterways, between lush greenery of the oasis-like riverbanks, with the adjacent rugged koppies contrasting starkly. Nights are spent under a canopy of stars that can simply take your breath away, with convivial company around a roaring campfire and 5 star meals - all adding to the experience.

The trail is suitable for the complete novice and specially designed, stable, 2-man, inflatable rafts makes it safe for the whole family, both young and old. Paddling techniques are easily mastered and the pleasure and excitement of the river makes for both an adventure and unforgettable experience.
Rapids encountered on the trail are an easy grade 1 to 2 and maybe a short grade 3, if the river is running high and contribute to making the trail an enjoyable introduction to rivers and canoeing with a little excitement thrown in. The river and surrounding wilderness is a paradise for bird watchers, a perfect place for the exploring hiker, as well as utopia for fishermen.

VAAL RIVER RAFTING TRIPS

To raft or kayak the Vaal in the Vredefort Dome is a very special experience. Our routes cross the
Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site. It is a natural wonderland, with hundreds of islands creating habitats for birds and wildlife. Look out for cormorant, darter, many species of duck, leguaans,  otters, vervet monkeys, and even signs of rooikat (caracal) and porcupine. The islands that create the rapids of the Vaal are a product of the geology of the Dome. Your guide will explain. The Vaal is also one of the world’s oldest flowing rivers. In addition to rafting, we run tours of the Vredefort
Dome itself.

TRIPS ON THE RIVER
There are several options:

Whitewater Rafting

- HALF DAY – 3.5 hours, usually starting at Otters’ Haunt and including about six good rapids.

- FULL DAY – 6 hours, starting at Otters or above, depending on water flows, and including more and bigger rapids. Lunch included.

- BUMPER RUN – 3 hours, starting above Parys town and running past golf island. Not for sissies! Fast & tricky whitewater.

Flatwater Canoeing

- MALACHITE TRAIL – 2-3 hours among the islands, enjoy peace and wildlife.

- CANOE DOME – Full day, downriver in the Dome, seeing the Bergland from the water. Lunch included.
