Of all the trails we run, the Orange Gorge (or !Gariep Falls route) is the most awesome in terms of its scenery and the sheer power of the river. The route follows the river as it twists from its east-west orientation to run north-south through a short but spectacular gorge. Halfway down are the !Gariep or Ritchie Falls, un-runnable by boat, which have to be portaged past. The picture below shows us having paddled back up the gorge to see the foot of the falls. In the lower gorge is one of South Africa's famous rapids - "Big Bunny", so named because a German visitor on one of our trips could not pronounce the word "rapid" and kept calling it the "big rabbit". Although the distance is fairly short we take 31/2 days because the surroundings are too good to miss - they just cry out to be explored. The trail begins at the border village of Onseepkans about 1hr30minutes drive from our main base at Kakamas. Drivers take the cars to the end point of the trail where there is safe parking. We return to the top and head downriver.

Information

Day One takes us to Flat Rocks campsite where a wonderful play rapid awaits and there are great hikes to the mountaintops. Days 2 & 3 are spent approaching and then portaging into the gorge. Most of the third day is spent paddling and walking up the gorge, and running rapids for fun, while we camp two nights at one spot. The river divides around a series of islands and forms two major channels, the Chicken Run (or "Little George" on the Namibian (west) side, and the main run (or "Big George") on the east, or South African side. We do not run the main gorge which is filled with dangerous potholes and suck-backs. But we do paddle and hike up to see its enormous rocks and thundering channels. The Chicken Run, as the name implies, is far friendlier though it too contains memorable rapids like Scorpion, Screwdriver and Little Falls. The granite landscape comprises some of the oldest rocks on earth and - believe it or not - there is a theory that once upon a time a huge mountain range perhaps the height of Everest stood here, but has been eroded over many eons. On day 4 we  carry one down the gorge, running Big Bunny, Dolly Parton and Last Gasp before, paddling to the end point.

Good To Know

How To Get To The Start Point At The Orange River Base:

You can drive up in your own vehicle or we can arrange vehicle hire if required. The road is a good tar road all the way up from Cape Town and takes around 8 hours. The road is also good tar coming in from the Gauteng direction. The last section of +/- 50 kms to the camp is usually a good dirt road. This road does, however, become difficult after heavy rain (not common in this area). We recommend that you contact the Pofadder Police Station (tel: 054 933 0022), Onseepkans Police Station (tel: 054 951 0002) or our offices (cel: 0743501670) to check the condition of the road and choose the alternative route if required. Full directions will be supplied on confirmation of booking. We can also make accommodation arrangements for you if you’d like to do the drive over two days. We can supply a bus and driver and fly in tours can also be arranged.

DO I NEED A PASSPORT? No, you don’t. The trip starts and ends on the South African side so no border crossing is required.

    The amazing Orange Gorge!!!

A few weeks ago myself and three other friends had the wonderful pleasure of doing the Orange Gorge with our experienced and hospitable guide Eben and Liquid360. What made this journey so unique was that for the four days we spent on the river we didn't see anybody else! We were alone in our experience of the majesty of the surrounding desert, the imposing cliffs, the peace of the waters and the animal and bird life.

But the Orange Gorge is not all peace and quiet, and be prepared for some unexpected adventures. In our case, with quite a low water level, a lot of adventure was found in steering clear of boulders in our way, and negotiating exciting rapids. I also enjoyed the uniqueness of having to 'abseil' all our gear and boating equipment down the river cliffs to reach the main gorge. The rock formations sculpted by the strong currents in this part of the river are simply awe-inspiring, especially with the changing soft light of the setting sun.

I highly recommend this trip to all! You will find peace and tranquility, adventure and friendship, good food and rest!

Thanks to Eben and the team.

TEAM BUILDING INSTITUTE ORANGE GORGE LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE WITH LIQUID360 ADVENTURES!

The red glow of the rising Kalahari sun illuminates the majestic and rugged walls of the Orange River Gorge announcing the start of an unforgettable day filled with sun, fast rapids and breathtaking scenery… yes, you’ve guessed it; white water rafting at its best! An incredible four day experience or rather “expedition” undertook by TBI that I wish to share with anyone that’s willing to listen, or read (in your case). So when you’re ready, let’s take a “row” down memory lane…
A well prepared and very excited TBI team left Pretoria on the 12th of June on a quest for fun, adventure and some quality team time… Our destination: Kakamas (The trail’s main base). Two unfortunate incidents prior to our departure left the team a bit shaken and caused three team members to miss the trip, but true to TBI culture team members sought to make the most of the experience in spite of the circumstances... so with spirits high and little sleep we started off on the 804 kilometre journey to Kakamas.
On arrival at “main base” we met Graeme Addison a.k.a. riverman, South Africa’s rafting and kayaking guru, who is known and recognized for his pioneering of river routes in South Africa and the development of the widely used CROC or “krokedil” (a two-seater raft). For many of us this was our first acquaintance with and introduction to the world of lifejackets, helmets and rushing water and we couldn’t have asked for a more experienced guide to show us the ropes. After fitting and packing rafting equipment and of course a glass of red wine, we turned in as the stage was set for our dance with the waves the next day.
At first light we got up, packed our bags and headed off to ONSEEPKANS, the border post between South Africa and Namibia where the Orange River weaves its way through the vast Kalahari (Another 150 km’s drive from Kakamas). Here we enjoyed a scrumptious and very filling brunch prior to getting our toes wet.
Liquid 360 Adventures’ great, no wait... their excellent catering and professional service was above and beyond what was expected and it greatly enhanced our experience! Every meal was a highlight and having Eben and Kobus as a part of our team was a definite treat and unexpected bonus.
So with tummies full and hearts racing with excitement we were off with our camping gear tightly secured in and to the rafts, ready to explore the Nile of Africa. Our first day on the river allowed us the opportunity to get a bit of a feel for the rafts, rowing and our rowing partners before attempting the bigger and longer rapids. Later in the afternoon we set up camp at Flat Rocks and enjoyed a nice hike up to the mountaintop close to our campsite. The evening (as most other evenings of the trip) was spent enjoying really good food, great company and of course deciding who would be voted off at tribal council.
The next two days’ rafting was much more challenging and “row, row, row your boat gently down the stream” was definitely something of the past! We got to run the “Chicken run” channel that contains three exhilarating rapids named Scorpion, Screwdriver and Little Falls. Day Three was mostly spent lowering the boats down into the gorge and preparing to run the biggest rapid of the route “BIG BUNNY”. A grade four encounter with one of nature’s most powerful elements that has yet to disappoint. Although the rapid was run in “individual” teams, it was a communal experience that is celebrated and valued by the entire team. To end of this memorable day we ran Dolly Parton and the evening was spent singing and dancing around the fire. A gentle row the next morning to where the boats were picked up was a fitting end to an amazing rafting trip.
Thank you to Graeme, Eben and his team for all their support and guidance during the trip and also a big thank you to Chris and Robbie for making it possible and investing in our team in this way! I’m proud to be part of the TBI team.
